Ihram

Ihram: The Sacred State

Ihram is the sacred state that a Muslim must enter before performing the rites of Hajj or Umrah. It involves wearing specific clothing and adhering to a set of rules and prohibitions. The word „Ihram“ also refers to the simple garments worn during this state. Below is a comprehensive guide to Ihram:

1. Preparation for Ihram

  • Purity and Cleansing: Before entering the state of Ihram, pilgrims should take a full-body purification bath (ghusl) or perform ablution (wudu). This symbolizes spiritual and physical cleanliness.
  • Clipping Nails and Hair: It is recommended to clip nails, trim mustaches, and remove unwanted body hair before donning Ihram garments.

2. Ihram Garments

  • For Men: Men wear two unstitched white sheets of cloth. One sheet (izar) is wrapped around the lower body, covering from the waist to just above the ankles. The other sheet (rida) is draped over the upper body, leaving the right shoulder exposed during certain rituals.
  • For Women: Women wear regular modest clothing that covers their entire body except for the face and hands. The clothing should not be form-fitting or showy.

3. Entering the State of Ihram

  • Intention (Niyyah): Pilgrims must make the intention to enter the state of Ihram for Hajj or Umrah. This intention is made in the heart and expressed verbally.
  • Talbiyah: After making the intention, pilgrims recite the Talbiyah:
Labbayka Allahumma labbayk. Labbayka la sharika laka labbayk. Inna al-hamda wa'n-ni'mata laka wa'l-mulk. La sharika lak.

    This translates to:

Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily, all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.

4. Prohibitions in Ihram

While in the state of Ihram, pilgrims must adhere to certain prohibitions:

  • No Cutting Hair or Nails: Pilgrims are not allowed to cut or trim their hair or nails.
  • No Using Perfume: Perfumes and scented products are prohibited.
  • No Hunting or Killing Animals: Hunting or killing animals is forbidden.
  • No Marital Relations: Engaging in marital relations or acts leading to such behavior is prohibited.
  • No Quarreling or Arguing: Pilgrims should avoid disputes and arguments.
  • No Wearing Stitched Clothing (for Men): Men must avoid wearing any stitched or fitted clothing, including socks and shoes that cover the ankle.

5. Common Misconceptions about Ihram

  • Color of Ihram Garments: While white is the traditional color for Ihram garments, the key requirement is that the garments be plain and unstitched. The color itself is not obligatory.
  • Footwear: Men can wear sandals that do not cover the ankles or the top part of the foot. Women can wear any type of footwear that is comfortable and modest.

6. Exiting Ihram

Pilgrims exit the state of Ihram after completing certain rituals of Hajj or Umrah. This usually involves performing Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba), Sa’i (walking between Safa and Marwah), and, in the case of Hajj, the symbolic stoning of the pillars (Ramy al-Jamarat).
